Financial and Retirement Planning Tools

March 27, 2017

Did you know there are tools available through mysunlife.ca/ubcfpp to help you with your financial and retirement planning? You have access to these tools to assist you with your personal finances.

Asset Allocation Tool: Which investments are right for you?

The UBC Faculty Pension Plan (FPP) provides seven investment options offering a variety of asset classes, enabling you to create your own portfolio from a list of specially constructed funds. It is important to review your investments periodically to ensure your portfolio is aligned with your tolerance to risk, as both can change over time.

The Asset Allocation Tool can assist you with selecting the appropriate investment options and takes less than 15 minutes to complete. Within the tool, you will take an Investment Profiler questionnaire and your answers to this questionnaire will help determine your investment time horizon and comfort with investment risk, and in turn, help you select the investment options that are right for you.

The Asset Allocation Tool can be accessed by signing into your account at mysunlife.ca/ubcfpp, then under Investments, select Manage plan > my plan > Tools > Asset Allocation Tool.

How do I view my current investment funds and asset mix?

You can view your current investment funds and asset mix by logging into mysunlife.ca/ubcfpp.  Under Investments, select Manage plan > my plan > Check on account > Balances to see your investment funds, and Check on account > Current asset mix to view your asset mix.

Our Navigating mysunlife.ca/ubcfpp webcast will also show you how access this information (jump to Slide 6 for the Asset Allocation Tool).

Retirement Income Estimator: What will my retirement income be?

The Plan offers retirement income options such as the Variable Payment Life Annuity and Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) and Life Income Fund (LIF)-Type Payments. One of the unique features of the UBC FPP is the flexibility to structure your retirement income and tailor it to your needs; you can use all or part of your account balance for any combination of the options.

Will the money you are saving and investing meet your financial needs in retirement? The Retirement Income Estimator tool provides illustrations and retirement forecasts based on your account information and customized information you provide. It is a good way to see if you are on track to meet your retirement goals. In the Retirement Income Estimator, you will be able to view:

  • Projected balances as at your expected retirement date;
  • Estimates of payment details, based on the different types of retirement options; and
  • A retirement forecast – which gives you a sense of whether you will have enough money set aside for retirement. This forecast considers your UBC FPP savings, government and other pensions and savings you may have.

The Retirement Income Estimator can be accessed by signing into your account at mysunlife.ca/ubcfpp, then under Investments, select Manage plan > my plan > Tools > Retirement Income Estimator. Also, the How to use the Retirement Income Estimator PDF provides detailed information on how to access and use the tool.
